I have a migraine today. I woke up with it. I tend to have Optical Migraines that mess with my vision.
After the oldest 3 got to school. I put on Octonauts for the 2 year old and the 4 year old. Then, I laid down and tried to get some rest. A little while later, my 2 year old came in with a raw looking piece of bacon in each hand. He had some in his mouth, trying to separate the fat from the meat so he could eat the meat.
I was a little horrified. But then my 4 year old tried to explain to me that he had cooked the bacon … on a plate … in the microwave. I went out to discover an entire 3 pound package of bacon ends on a plate, still in the brick shape that it came in. Ho boy! By now, the 2 year old had abandoned his bacon, because chewing is too hard and he got what he wanted out of it: flavor. I thanked my 4 year old for taking such good care of his brother. I explained that the bacon wasn’t cooked enough. I placed it in a stoneware pot and cooked it in the oven.
Why the microwave? Well you see my mom (Grammy) cooks bacon in the microwave. When she comes to visit, she often will cook some for the kids. My 4 year old doesn’t know all the particulars of microwave bacon – the main one being that the meat has to cook all the way through. All he knows is bacon, plate, microwave.
Half Baked Keto
The rise of Keto has lead to a rise in misinformation about Keto. What I lovingly call “Internet Keto” seems to be all about bacon and butter, MCT oil and exogenous ketones. “Grocery Store Keto” is a new thing now, that I love … and then regret (that was too much sugar alcohol for me!) I’ve been in and out of Keto since 2016, and wow, some of my ideas about Keto were way off. All of these things can lead to a half baked Keto plan. And that’s okay! Just so long as I don’t stay there.
One thing I loved from attending Keto Salt Lake was that we were all trying, all missing parts and pieces, and all supporting one another. I saw that everyone there was teachable, from the high profile presenters, to the guy who had just started Keto 6 weeks prior. It takes time to learn a skill, it takes people to learn from, it takes people to share with.
What Helps Save Your Bacon?
- Does your Keto plan feel half baked?
- Where are you getting your information?
- How will you know what to pay attention to and what to ignore?
- Is there too much flexibility in your Keto plan or not enough?
- What helps you feel cared for and nourished?
- Consider finding a community of people who can be teachable with you.
